Firouz Farman Farmaian, “Poetry of the Tribe”

Leonard Tourne Gallery

September 2018 — New York, NY — Leonard Tourné Gallery in partnership with Salomon Arts is pleased to announce the opening reception of “Poetry of the Tribe,” the debut solo exhibition in New York of Firouz FarmanFarmaian. The exhibition, which opens September 20th at Salomon Arts in Tribeca, is curated by Lisa de Simone and will feature FarmanFarmaian’s most recent works.

Acclaimed writer and essayist Cyrus Bozorgmehr said of the exhibition, “Firouz FarmanFarmaian’s meta-reflection on the abstraction of tribalism takes us beyond family and landscape to channel the evolving rhythms of identity. Deconstructing memory and archetype, ‘Poetry of the Tribe’ is a vividly elusive series of visions – where monumentality shimmers through an intangible prism and totems tower within a collective consciousness rather than an earthly temple.

“Tribalism is a realm of ferocious beauty, of ancestral longing and, ultimately, of love itself. No matter how efficient our superegos become, the visceral drive to weave ourselves into a timeless tapestry of loyalty, custom and symbol beat eternal.”

Born in Teheran in 1973, FarmanFarmaian is a contemporary Persian artist. After the Islamic Revolution, he fled to Paris where he studied architecture and visual arts. During this period he started working with various media, including paint, print, sculpture, film, and music. He also creates installations and performances shown at the Marrakech museum and art centers throughout Spain.

Important subjects in his work include identity, nature, architectonics and the interplay between realism and abstraction.

FarmanFarmaian has had exhibitions worldwide in galleries and institutions such as GRK Gallery (Paris and Hamburg), Shirin Gallery (New York and Tehran ), Galeria Maior (Mallorca), Niavaran Cultural Center (Tehran), Marrakech Museum (Marrakech), Iranian Heritage Foundation (London), Janet Rady Fine Arts (Art Basel, Basel), Magic of Persia Foundation (Dubai, Monte-Carlo and Los Angeles), Fabien Fryns Fine Arts (Marbella). He figures in the HIH Farah Pahlavi Collection, Foundation Behnam Bakhtiar Collection, and the Mo Afkhami Collection among others. He has his studio and artist-run gallery in Marbella, Spain.
